Rural High School Visits

Description

The HCB Rural High School Visits program is designed to give the students at your school an insight into what a career in health means and what it is like to study a health course. This is done through interaction with older students who are currently studying a health course at University. The Rural High School Visits program is complementary to the residential Career Workshops which delve deeper into the specific details about working and studying in the health industry.

The aim of the school visits is to inspire school students to pursue a career in health through engagement with mentors of a similar age in an interactive, informal, and fun manner. The facilitators will share their personal experiences about moving and studying away from home, what university life is like, and what their future career aspirations are. Most sessions, depending on time constraints, will also include some hands on activities with ‘tools of the trades’ from various health disciplines. HCB promotional materials and resources will be available for students, teachers, and the school to keep.

Visits are coordinated by Health Workforce Queensland and conducted by University students who are currently studying towards a career in health. These students will be members of the Rural Health Clubs of Queensland:

  • BUSHFIRE: Bond
  • HOPE4HEALTH: Griffith
  • RHINO: JCU
  • TROHPIQ: UQ, QUT

Schools will typically be visited over a three or four day road trip that is conducted by members of the clubs above. The sessions are aimed at high school students from Yrs 9-12 and a group size of approximately 30 students. Generally, each club trys to complete 2 road trips each year and will visit between 5-8 schools per road trip.
